Fog Chiller

The Fog Chiller is by far the easiest and coolest project we have made. It makes the fog hug the ground instead of rise up into the air. It gives a spooky low-lying fog effect. Our cost to make this was about $40.00.
    Materials we used are:
  • 1 Inexpensive plastic trash can 45-55 gallon size ($7)
  • 1 Super Flexible dryer vent 25' (non-rigid) ($18)
  • 1 8' piece of " PVC pipe ($2)
  • 1 qty 4-way coupler ($.75)
  • 4 qty 90° angle couplers ($.50 ea)
  • Duct tape ($2)
  • Empty ice cream bucket, 2 or more is better ($4 ea, best part is you get to eat the ice cream first)
  • OPTIONAL: Spray paint to match trash can color ($.97 Wal*Mart)
    Tools we used are:
  • utility knife
  • PVC pipe cutter or hack saw
Our Fog Chiller design is a combination of what we found on
Monterlist of Halloween Projects site.

Halloween How-To

We began the build by cutting a not quite 4" hole in the side at the bottom of the trashcan with the utility knife. Since this trash can was an inexpensive one from Wal*Mart (about $7.00) the side is very thin and was extremely easy to cut. We made another hole near the top of the trashcan on the opposite side. Halloween How-To
NOTE: The placement of the holes was made for our use in our yard. If you plan to make one of these, think about where you will place your fog chiller AND your fog machine. The fog machine needs to be close to a wall outlet. It is best to not plug these machines into an extension cord as they do draw a good amount of current.

Next we placed strips of duct tape around the holes to prevent any sharp edges that might cut into the vent ducting. It also cleans it up nice. Halloween How-To
If your duct tape does not match the color of your trashcan, then use spray paint to color match the duct tape. This is just an aesthetics thing. Halloween How-To
NOTE: As you let the paint dry, use the time to cut the PVC pipe. We cut 4 pieces that are about 1" in length and 4 that are 3' long. The PVC is used to hold the vent duct in place on the inside wall of the trashcan. We did not glue the PVC as it needs to be flexible to allow it to shape properly.
Put the 4 short pieces of pipe in the 4-way coupler and the 90 couplers on the ends sticking out of the short pipes. Making sure to make the 90° pieces angle slightly to one side all the same direction. Trust me, this will make sense in a minute. Halloween How-To
Now the longer pieces of PVC are placed in the other end of the 90° angles. The resulting construct should look like a twisted pair of table legs.
Place one end of the vent ducting into the bottom hole of the trash can from the inside so that the ducting is sticking out about 8" to 10". Halloween How-To
Now put the PVC construct into the trash can and begin to wrap the ducting around the PVC. Either direction does not matter. We went clockwise as this seemed the correct path to take, but whatever makes you happy. Try to stretch the ducting out a bit, but not too much as this can tear easily, if you do tear it, duct tape to the rescue. Now you know why it is called duct tape and not duck tape. I don't think that PETA would like you putting this tape on ducks. Halloween How-To
Finish the wrapping as close to your top hole as possible. If you still have a lot left over you can cut off the excess, but DO NOT cut it off until it is placed out the top hole. Too little and well, it's not a good thing. Duct tape will hold at first, but not for long. The fog that these machines puts out is hot, that's why your making this CHILLER, to cool it off! Some duct tape on the ends of the ducting will keep it from coming apart. However, we found that more tape was needed the next year we used this as the tape did fall off a bit. Halloween How-To
Once the ducting is to your liking, your need to adjust the PVC pipes to make it push the ducting up against the outside walls. This is why no glue is used to hold the PVC together. Bend each pipe left or right as needed to hold up the ducting. Halloween How-To
Now you might be wondering where does the ice cream bucket come into play?? Fill that with water and put it in the freezer. About a day later you will have an ice block that makes the "chiller" portion of the Fog Chiller. Place it in the middle of the PVC pipes and put the lid on the trashcan. The ice is what chills the fog as it circles around the ducting. Once the fog is cooled it hugs the ground. We did not take the ice out of the bucket so that when it melts the water is contained. Two or more blocks of ice works best. You will want to put the ice in the chiller about 30 minutes before you attempt to put fog in the ducting, this gives time to cool the air inside. Once the ice is in, put the lid on and DO NOT take it off, this will help to keep the air as cool as possible. Halloween How-To
